Walnut and Wenge Dining Table
After discovering a remarkable pair of highly figured, book-matched walnut slabs, the client immediately envisioned them as the centerpiece of his home. He saw a table where family and friends could gather for meals, celebrations, and everyday moments for years to come.
The tabletop showcases the natural beauty of the walnut, with its figured grain patterns mirrored across the centerline. Delicate wenge accents frame the outer edges, providing a subtle contrast that enhances the richness of the wood without distracting from it. One of the client’s requests was to have removable extension leaves at each end to allow the table to adapt effortlessly when hosting larger gatherings. Making the extensions seamlessly mate to the tabletop required carefully cutting an angle reciprocal to the under bevel on the inside of each leaf.
The pedestal base was developed through close collaboration with the client, who was drawn to sculptural and organic forms. Its elegant shape conceals a carefully engineered structure designed to support the substantial weight of the solid walnut top while maintaining a light, refined appearance. Balancing strength with visual delicacy was a central challenge of the build and ultimately one of its defining achievements.
Mid-Century Modern Desk
Designed and built exclusively by Bunch’s Woodworks, this walnut desk draws inspiration from classic Mid-Century Modern design while incorporating custom details tailored to its owner.
The client needed a desk that would work comfortably with his existing office chair while maintaining the clean, understated appearance he admired. This client had specific dimension and design requirements that could not be fulfilled easily with commercial options. The resulting design showcases flowing lines, rounded edges, and beautiful walnut wood grain in a piece that feels both timeless and distinctly personal.
A subtle shadow line separates the walnut top from the base, giving the desktop a light, floating appearance. Below, the legs showcase a miter-fold construction that allows the grain to flow continuously around each rounded corner, a small detail that reflects the level of care invested in every aspect of the build. The legs sit with a slight rake and splay, and a gentle taper, creating an elegant silhouette that feels light despite the desk’s rigidity.
The open base was intentionally designed to accommodate future rolling file cabinets, ensuring the desk can evolve alongside the client’s needs. The result is a workspace that is as practical as it is refined. It’s truly a custom piece built to serve its owner for decades while celebrating the natural beauty of walnut.
Dovetailed Serving Trays
These serving trays demonstrate how even the simplest objects can become opportunities for exceptional workmanship. Crafted from richly figured curly maple, each tray highlights the shimmering grain and depth that make this species so distinctive.
The corners are joined with hand cut compound-angle dovetails, which are a demanding technique that requires precision, patience, and a deep understanding of joinery. While subtle in appearance, these details transform the trays from everyday serving pieces into handcrafted works of functional art. Elegant, durable, and built to be enjoyed for years to come.
Carved Bookshelf
Created as an exploration of decorative woodworking and hand carving, this bookshelf provided an opportunity to blend traditional woodworking skills with creative experimentation. Built from quarter-sawn makore, the piece showcases the wood’s rich color, fine texture, and striking ribbon-like grain.
Hand carved details appear throughout the design, including crescent-shaped pierced carvings, sculpted round overs, flowing swirls, and a distinctive checkered drawer front. Each element was shaped by hand, allowing the surface to reflect the subtle variations and character that only hand tools can achieve.
The joinery was treated as a design feature rather than something to be hidden. Through-tenons were left proud of the surface and carefully chamfered, highlighting the construction methods of the piece. To further elevate the visual depth of the makore, the bookshelf was finished using a traditional French polishing process. Layer upon layer of shellac was applied and refined by hand, producing a luminous gloss that highlights every detail of the wood and carving.
Ash Standing Cabinet
Built from ash during Mike’s time at the Charleston Woodworking School, this cabinet reflects the strong influence of both the Arts & Crafts movement and the work of renowned furniture maker Mike Pekovich. The design embraces a philosophy that values craftsmanship, honest construction, and thoughtful detailing.
A defining feature of the piece is its exposed joinery. Rather than hiding the methods of construction, the joinery is celebrated as part of the design itself, which is a characteristic that Mike particularly admires. For him, visible joinery tells the story of how a piece was built and expresses the strength and integrity that lie beneath its surface.
The cabinet combines practical storage with carefully considered aesthetics. A single door, single drawer, and dual open shelving compartments provide functionality, while a hand crafted Japanese kumiko panel backed with rice paper introduces a sense of lightness and refinement. Matching pulls on the door and drawer unify the design, and the contrast between the cabinet’s strong framework and delicate kumiko details create a piece that feels both grounded and inviting.
Custom Nightstand
For this project, the client provided a design they admired and asked that it be adapted to better suit their space and needs. The primary challenge was decreasing the overall height while preserving the proportions that made the original design so appealing.
Constructed from book-matched, quarter-sawn white oak, the nightstand showcases carefully selected material and precise execution. Continuous grain wraps around the corners of the case, creating the impression that the piece was carved from a single block of wood. This attention to grain continuity enhances the visual harmony of the design and rewards close inspection.
Opening the piece reveals a subtle surprise, an Amboyna burl veneer back panel and drawer bottom. Known for its dramatic figure and depth, the burl introduces a luxurious contrast to the clean, architectural character of the white oak. The casework rests on a base made from walnut, constructed with bridle joints and mortise and tenon joinery.
Sewing Table Modification
This project focused on adapting an existing piece of furniture to better support the client’s passion for quilting. While she loved her sewing desk, she wanted to incorporate a sewing machine lift that would allow the machine’s work surface to sit perfectly flush with the tabletop, a critical feature for handling large quilts and other fabric projects.
Achieving this required more than simply cutting an opening in the desk. The structure first had to be carefully evaluated and reinforced with additional blocking and a strengthened back panel to support the lift mechanism and maintain the desk’s rigidity. Once the necessary modifications were complete, the tabletop opening was precisely laid out and cut, and adjustments were made to the shelf and decorative arch beneath to create adequate clearance for the lift.
Rather than discarding the removed section of the tabletop, it was transformed into a custom fitted insert. Edge banding and rabbets were added so the panel could sit neatly within the opening whenever the sewing machine is lowered, restoring the desk’s full work surface and original appearance.
When the lift is raised, the sewing machine’s bed aligns perfectly with the tabletop, creating a seamless work area. A precision fit plexiglass insert fills the remaining gap around the machine, providing continuous support for fabric and making quilting significantly more comfortable and efficient.
